(STATS) -- Chris Klieman took a break from practice Tuesday to address members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference media. China Shoes Wholesale .It was just a short break for the North Dakota State coach.(Were) continuing to strive to be better every day, Klieman said. What we did yesterday was great, but now were looking forward to the 2016 season. The undisputed kings of the FCS, the Bison won an unprecedented fifth straight national championship with last seasons 37-10 win over Jacksonville State in Frisco, Texas. The quest for No. 6 probably began shortly after that contest and remains in full force with this years opener against Charleston Southern looming Aug. 27 at the Fargodome in front of a nationally televised audience. The Bison, a remarkable 71-5 over the last five seasons, earned all but two first-place votes while topping the MVFC preseason poll unveiled Tuesday. Not even the controversy regarding a recent decision by the school to limit access to media outlets without a North Dakota State broadcast rights agreement can derail the focus of Kliemans program.(The media situation is) maybe overblown, said Klieman, who went 28-3 in his first two seasons as Bison coach. Ive got enough of my own problems getting ready for Charleston Southern. One problem Klieman does not appear to have is replacing star quarterback Carson Wentz, who was selected second overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in this years NFL Draft.Redshirt sophomore Easton Stick played in 11 games last season, went 8-0 as a starter and won three playoff contests while replacing the injured Wentz, who returned to start and star in the national championship game. Stick completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 1,144 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also finished third on the team with 498 rushing yards (5.9 yards per carry) and scored five times.Wentz proved to be a quality mentor and a special friend to Stick.Carson taught Easton everything he knows, Klieman said. We knew we had a pretty good prospect.Stick wont have to carry the offensive load himself.King Frazier finished fourth in the Valley with 1,158 rushing yards and had 11 touchdowns. He was one of five Bison named to the conferences all-preseason team also announced Tuesday.Senior linebacker Nick DeLuca is the only FCS player to be named to the Butkus Award watch list. He recorded a team-high 135 tackles plus three sacks and two interceptions for a 2015 NDSU defense that yielded 36 points in its final five games, including the playoffs. The Bison, however, dont expect to have an easy time beginning defense of their most recent title. After opening with a Charleston Southern squad that won 10 games and lost to Jacksonville State in the postseason, NDSU hosts STATS Offensive Player of the Year Cooper Kupp and Eastern Washington, then gets its only taste of FBS competition at Iowa on Sept. 17.Its the toughest non-conference schedule weve had in the six years Ive been here, Klieman said. Then the Valley is always a challenge. That likely wont change after five teams from the league qualified for the playoffs in 2015. Northern Iowa was picked second in the preseason poll and the only other school to garner first-place votes.North Dakota State opens conference play Oct. 1 at home against an Illinois State group its shared the league title with the past two seasons. The Redbirds, who fell to the Bison in the 2014 national championship game, were picked to finish fourth in the league and must make up for the departures of STATS Offensive Player of the Year finalist running back Marshaun Coprich and star quarterback Tre Roberson. The talking season is over, so lets go play, Illinois State coach Brock Spack said.---=MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL=Team (first-place votes)1. The designation was released Monday after the deadline passed for NFL teams to use franchise or transition tags on players becoming free agents. When the Yankees announced the return of Aroldis Chapman to New York on a record five-year, $86 million deal, my espnW colleague Kavitha Davidson remarked on Twitter that she and I were essentially playing a game of hot potato with the troubled closer. As fans of the two teams Chapman has played for since his suspension for domestic violence -- the Cubs and the Yankees -- weve both certainly been quite vocal about his lack of contrition and the uncomfortable position weve been put in as fans. When Davidsons beloved Bronx Bombers acquired Chapman at a bargain basement trade price in December of last year, she wrote about how the move reeked of gross opportunism, and I did my Sports Reporters Parting Shot on the inappropriate standing ovation Yankees fans gave him in his first game back from suspension. When he was dealt to the Cubs in July, she wrote how thankful she was to be able to enjoy the ninth inning again, while I bemoaned the addition of Chapman to an impossibly lovable Cubs team that looked primed to win it all. Of course, Chicago did go on to win the World Series, prompting another piece in which I celebrated the long-awaited win and thanked the baseball gods for giving me a final out that didnt feature Chapman on the mound playing hero.Which leads us to this week, and Davidsons column on how Chapmans return to New York?should be an opportunity to actually make some progress in the conversation about domestic violence. There are plenty of fans interested in exploring the reconciliation of Chapmans talent on the field with his transgressions off of it, but many others push back against any criticism of him.Folks who say they separate their morality from their fandom would likely add that Davidson and I are wasting our time. Those who think Chapmans off-the-field issues should be of no concern to fans might even believe that were picking on him. And, oddly, many who say they dont care about Chapmans violent acts care enough to threaten and harass reporters like me who choose to write about him.I wont give the spotlight to specific trolls by posting their tweets here, but these are exact quotes from my timeline: Stay away from Wrigley you fugly whalle. Fake China Shoes. Nobody wants you anywhere near Wrigley when Chapman closes out the first WS title, Go away you fat f----ing pig. Nobody in the #Cubs franchise cares about your take on them, and, who can forget, You should be hit in the head with a Chapman heater and killed.Said Davidson on my Thats What She Said podcast: The effort that people take to combat those of us that are trying to speak out about those issues is really indicative. ... Theyre kind of telling on themselves in that sense. They say we shouldnt really talk about this, we shouldnt really care about this, sports is escapism, but [theyre] also going to put as much effort into arguing the other side as we put into arguing this side.So whats behind the desire to shout down those of us seeking to improve the experience for fans who care about the morality of the athletes they cheer for? Why do some men (and its only been men in my experience) have such an angry, visceral response to requests for athlete accountability, contrition and proof of a change in behavior? Is it merely that some fans will protect the players on the teams they love, no matter the circumstance? Or is it rooted in misogyny, a rejection accusers claims combined with a deep-seated anger that a female journalist would have the audacity to criticize a male athlete? It certainly feels as if the pushback isnt just about devotion to team. The nastiest messages I get on social media are always in response to tweets or stories about male-female dynamics. Domestic violence, sexual assault, feminism, harassment, misogyny, gender equality -- if the topic relates to gender issues in any way, I can be certain that my timeline will be filled with insults and threats. And those who send them can be certain that I wont stop asking questions and demanding better answers -- and so will Davidson. As she noted on the podcast, This is a very new space for all of us. Whether were media or fans or teams or domestic violence agencies ... having these conversations is the only real way well get to any real solutions. ' ' '
